| A geographical information
system (GIS) is used for mapping and analyzing just about any object
on earth. There are two basic GIS concepts you need to know to facilitate
usage of the Geographic Data Viewer. |
| The HEAT has been created to
assist residents of Hillsborough County by providing evacuation and sheltering
information in the event of a hurricane or other natural disaster. |
 |
| Let's take shelter data. How
would you keep track of and communicate shelter information to the public?
You might use a database to track shelter names, addresses ,capacity,
and any other attributes that are important. One shelter is a record
in a database. Each category is a field. |
 |
Now imagine some
of the shelters in Hillsborough county. We
need to keep track of relevant information for each shelter. We have to map
the geographical location to each shelter and identify it's attributes. This
is the foundation of GIS. A GIS shows where something is and what it is.
You will be able to idenitfy attribute data of these features as navigate
the Geographic Data Viewers. |
