There are also other layers of information used in our GIS. Shelters
would constitute one layer of information. We can also have evacuations
zone, shelters and aerial images.
Any information can be represented as a layer. A Map represents evacuation
data in an artificial way. Vector layers are representation of linear
geographic features.
A point is good representation of what a feature is. (i.e. shelters, hospitals,
firestations).
Lines represent features like evacuation routes.
Polygons are solid multi-sided shape. (i.e. jurisdicational boundaries,
evacuation zones).
Geographic Data Viewer Map Window
When you open the geographic data viewer through your Internet browser,
you will see a window like the example shown here.
At the top will be the usual browser interface. Don't press any of
the browser buttons on the Browser Interface, while the interactive map
is open. The map is displayed in the main window of the Geographic Data
Viewer. On the left, you see the Toolbar. You will use the tools to look
at, ask questions of, and change the map. On the right is the Layer/Legend
Panel, where you can control what layers are visible on the map. Below
the Map Window is the Attribute Panel, where attribute information about
the features on the map are displayed.
Everything will be discuss in depth in the following pages.
